ABA Word of the Week: Task Analysis

* From Wikipedia: “Task analysis is the analysis of how a task is accomplished, including a detailed description of both manual and mental activities, task and element durations, task frequency, task allocation, task complexity, environmental conditions, necessary clothing and equipment, and any other unique factors involved in or required for one or more people to perform a given task. “

* Breaking something (task, language, etc.) down into discrete components

* Can be used to assess where holes in a skill area are
* Can provide visual breakdown of a work task

Assessments/Programs That Task Analyze Well:

Assessment of Basic Language and Learning Skills-Revised (ABLLS-R)

Strategies for Teaching based on Autism Research (STAR)

Functional Assessment and Cirriculum for Teaching Everyday Routines (FACTER)

Example Task Analysis: Making a PB&J

Get jelly from refrigerator & put on counter
Get P.B. from refrigerator & put on counter
Get bread from refrigerator & put on counter
Get water bottle from refrigerator
Get paper plate from pantry & put on counter
Open bread bag
Get 2 slices of bread
Microwave the bread (push express)
Finish opening PB & J
Open drawer
Get out knife
Get bread out of microwave
Get PB from jar and put on slice of bread
Get J from jar and put on same slice of bread
Put top slice of bread on
Bring plate to table
Bring water to table
Eat!
Close PB
Put PB in refrigerator
Put jelly in refrigerator
Put bread in refrigerator
Wipe table with paper towel
Throw paper towel and plate away under sink
